This story has become the fascination for all of us at Ancient Purity starting in 2025. It’s led to an older story and another story over the other side of the Atlantic. I have got so into this story that the way I drive home from Ancient Purity or even walk in etc has totally changed. Ewan who cycles home suddenly finds the ride back more interesting each time. Before I go into the past let me tell you what is the Mothman and what happened. The Mothman is a winged, red-eyed man like creature. It is a fixture of cryptid lore (cryptids by the way are legendary or hidden animals whose existence is disputed) I digress but my friend Ian had this amazing book by a guy Karl Shuker or something the beasts that hide from men, I highly recommend it. Anyway some interpret the Mothman as a supernatural omen or harbinger of doom. Even skeptics admit the pattern is compelling: a humanoid shape, wings or wing-like appendages, glowing/red eyes, late-night sightings, recurring across dozens of witness statements.
The Mothman legend began in the mid-1960s in Point Pleasant, West Virginia USA. Two young couples driving near an abandoned WWII munitions plant reportedly saw a tall, winged humanoid with glowing red eyes and a wingspan of perhaps 10 feet. In the following months dozens of other sightings were reported: a large, winged, human-shaped figure appearing at night in local woods, sometimes chasing cars or hovering ominously. The phenomenon reached worldwide fame when writer John Keel published The Mothman Prophecies in 1975, linking the sightings to strange events including UFOs, “men in black,” and ultimately to the tragic collapse of the local suspension bridge (the Silver Bridge) in December 1967, 46 people died. It wasn’t this way I heard of it, but actually the Richard Gere movie my friend again Ian showed me from 2002.
The Little Braxted Sighting 2025
So back maybe October 2025 the 2 lads (Zack & Connor) were working in the warehouse and were finishing up for the day. Over by the shipping containers they saw a figure, strange not quite human shape. Moving a little at first they thought it’s a weird person, then it’s too strange. Ghostly, not human, strange. They tell Gary and he thinks maybe they saw something but nothing paranormal. However curiosity got the better of him and he looks up paranormal stuff Little Braxted, Essex. Then he finds a video on Instagram by Paranormal Reason. Just before finishing this up I spoke to the guy from there Mark turns out he lives in Essex too. The most crazy thing is it seems they shot the video here around the same time the guys saw it. So thats the story of now. Let’s get into what happened before, the area, the Mothman and what could be going on. The pictures below I took around the area. The first below are the shipping containers where Connor and Zack saw it.
Some 6 months after this, I get chatting to Trudy the co owner of the estate. I said, we have this story, the lads seeing the thing, followed by the coincidences of Mark coming round making the video locally. I thought she’ll find the story interesting and or funny, she then tells me. I saw something years ago by the bins (again in the picture below). At first she thought it was someone who’d been fishing with a load of equipment around them putting something in the bin (There are fishing lakes on the grounds( but then realised it wasn’t that, it was something else, then she walked quickly away. Trudy had never mentioned it to anyone until this day I told her what had happened.

The nearby fields in Rivenhall
Then there’s the other thing, my photo. Taken by the other Church in Rivenhall, the creature in it doesn’t make sense. The size isn’t right, I spotted it on the picture and zoomed in. I only realised this recently but you tell me, the picture will be below. There’s something wrong with the ratio, it shouldn’t look like this in my opinion. How many insects, flys, even moths etc are going to be in a picture? They don’t show up, this one has.

The early 90’s Sighting
Little did I know with all the other stories and facts about Little Braxted that this Mothman sighting goes back 30+ years. There is a Mill House which I drive past most nights, sometimes walk. It is the place of the 1st sighting. A pair of siblings (children at the time) reported seeing a humanoid-winged creature at night with red eyes from the bedroom.
Sorry to the 2 now ladies for not crediting you, If you get in touch I’ll update, and you’re most welcome to come visit if you want a trip down memory lane. I’d like to make a short video about it. This is the exact account of one of the sisters.

I’ve just watched the ‘Unsolved Mysteries- V4 E5’ aka The Mothman!!!
Myself and my Twin sister Laura were in our bedroom one evening playing – and I remember the moon being extremely bright… we were back and forth looking out our bedroom window looking at the moon… and then when we went to look out again, we saw these bright red eyes looking straight at myself and my sister. We screamed and felt scared and closed the curtains. We ran downstairs and told our mum and she came upstairs to look for herself and unfortunately it was gone!!! Our mum didn’t believe us and thought it was our imagination.
All I know is that my sister and I were in Primary school from a young age and now age 36, we still remember what we both saw!!!
We lived in the countryside, in Little Braxted, Essex in the UK at that time.
I really thought this was our young minds playing tricks on us!! But, definitely a core memory that my sister and I will never forget!! I’m just glad we aren’t alone in this.
I personally always thought that area is creepy. Below is the Mill House and area opposite.

Where it happened – Little Braxted, Essex – The Quiet Village with Deep Roots
Little Braxted is a small rural parish in the Maldon district of Essex, with a parish population of only 175 (2021 census). At its heart stands a small medieval church, dedicated to St Nicholas’s Church, Little Braxted. The church was extensively decorated during the Victorian era but retains its ancient origins. The surrounding landscape is typical English countryside: farmland, narrow lanes, hedgerows, small woods and open fields, places where dusk and darkness bring shadows, strange shapes and sudden sounds. It is also our home, the location of Ancient Purity since we moved here in 2017. Our building itself over 700 years old and the last building of its type in England. The local area has a village green, pub (the Green Man) and typical Essex lanes and river crossings. The area is quiet, mostly farmland and small woods, you can drive through in under a minute, hedgerows, winding lanes and quiet fields. Also for cricket fans the worlds best cricket bats come from Little Braxted. The Willow Bat trees a’re grown in the same grounds as Ancient Purity.
Historically, Little Braxted had deep ties to the 17th-century rector Lawrence Washington (1602-1652), who, after being ejected from another parish, became rector there. Lawrence Washington is an ancestor of 1st President of the USA George Washington. In fact you can go into Maldon I think it’s All Saints Church and see the Washington Window. But below is the St Nicholas’s Church, Little Braxted.

Did Mothman Follow the Washingtons to the USA then Return to Essex?
Bear with me on this but, Lawrence Washington, served as rector in Little Braxted in the early 1600s before his descendants emigrated to the Americas. Mothman legend: first emerged in West Virginia in the 1960s, near where the Washington descendants later settled (Virginia / the eastern USA). Was the Mothman tied to the Washington bloodline. Maybe it “came with them” to the New World. Maybe its restless spirit remembered the old English parish and somehow returned centuries later, first to West Virginia (launch pad for legend), then maybe re-encountered by someone near Little Braxted. At this point in life I no longer rule things like that out. A cryptid with roots in both sides of the Atlantic, tied to the same ancestral family. Pure folklore-style symmetry.

If You Visit Little Braxted
If you’re brave (or curious) enough to take a night walk around Little Braxted, and maybe peer at smoky hedgerows under the moonlight. Personally I love to drive around it. You can park up on some grass verges, there’s one opposite the church you can even fit a large van on. Take a torch, a rain coat, and a camera, then…
- Visit the old church, imagine its windows lit by candle or lantern centuries ago, a quiet tower standing against the dark. Imagine that the bloodline that formed the USA was here. Also say a pray you keep safe while looking for the Mothman.
- Walk slowly along the narrow lanes, listen to wind, rustling leaves, owls, night birds. lots of Muntjac around too.
- Tap into the invisible vibe, be as though you can’t be seen. Open your mind and look out.
Here’s some pics I took around the lanes.

The Mothman Prophecies – The Book
The Mothman Prophecies book centres on a bizarre series of events that unfolded between November 1966 and December 1967 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. As I mentioned earlier with two young couples who reported seeing a huge manlike figure with ten-foot wings, a broad chest, and glowing red eyes. It did not flap its wings like a bird but seemed to rise and glide with unnatural speed. Their report triggered dozens of similar sightings over the next year. Farmers, police officers, teenagers, and ordinary families all described the same impossible creature: half man, half bird, capable of moving silently at extreme speed, often observing people rather than attacking. Some witnesses said they felt an overwhelming sense of dread or found their animals behaving strangely afterward.
Journalist and paranormal investigator John Keel arrived in Point Pleasant to document what was happening. As he collected testimonies, he discovered that the Mothman sightings were only one part of a much larger pattern. The town was experiencing UFO sightings, strange lights in the sky, sudden technology failures, bizarre phone calls, and encounters with intimidating strangers who resembled the classic Men in Black. People also reported strange dreams, visions of disasters, and episodes of missing time. Keel found himself caught in this web of weirdness. He repeatedly received warnings from mysterious individuals that something catastrophic was coming, but the details were always vague or contradictory.

The strange events culminated on 15 December 1967, when the Silver Bridge collapsed during rush hour, killing 46 people. Some residents later felt the Mothman sightings were a kind of warning or omen leading up to the tragedy. Although Keel never concluded that the Mothman caused the disaster, he believed the pattern of synchronicities, prophecies and sightings suggested that some unknown intelligence was at work. His book presents the idea that paranormal phenomena may all stem from the same source, which he referred to as ultraterrestrials: entities that can influence human perception, appear in different forms across cultures, and engineer events that look like coincidence.
The legacy of the Mothman story comes from the many competing explanations. The natural-animal theory suggests the creature was a misidentified owl or sandhill crane, though this fails to match most eyewitness details. The cryptid theoryargues Mothman is a real, undiscovered species, perhaps something ancient or mutated that avoided detection in the old TNT bunkers. The supernatural or omen theory claims Mothman appears before disaster, similar to banshees or other prophetic beings in folklore. Keel’s ultraterrestrial theory suggests it is part of a larger intelligence that manifests in whatever form fits the era, connecting Mothman to UFOs, fairies, demons, and gods across human history. Skeptics propose mass hysteria, saying fear, rumour, and suggestion magnified ordinary events into an extraordinary legend.
Despite the lack of concrete answers, The Mothman Prophecies remains powerful because it blends creature sightings, psychological fear, synchronistic warnings, and a real-world tragedy. It is not merely a monster story but a deep exploration of how the unknown interacts with human consciousness. The tale endures because it sits perfectly between mystery, folklore, and genuine human experience, making Mothman one of the most iconic and unsettling paranormal legends of the modern age.

In the end, the Mothman of Essex sits in that space of folklore and the unknown. Little Braxted is an ancient landscape with lanes that hold the past quietly beneath the hedgerows. Did it go to the USA and come back? There are far stranger things going on daily. What makes the Mothman legend powerful is not just the creature itself but the atmosphere it creates. A silent figure with shining eyes in the fields of an old English village sounds like the beginning of a dark fairy tale. The famous sightings in the USA sound more like a movie, in fact they are. But the sighting came first.
Little Braxted has always carried an air of sacredness. The ancient church, the deep history, the hidden lines of energy running through the land. If strange things do appear anywhere, it is in places like this, where the old and the new overlap. It is the perfect home for Ancient Purity, we couldn’t believe we found it. Perhaps that is why the Mothman found its way into the story of this tiny Essex parish. I know Mark has been doing loads of research on the area, hopefully we’ll do a video sometime
The Mothman invites us to look twice at the dark edges of the countryside, to wonder what might be watching from the treeline and to remember that even in modern England, the strange still has room to move. Little Braxted will likely remain a peaceful village, yet now it carries a legend that sets it apart. A creature in the dusk, a mystery that continues to grow every time it is told. I keep exploring the mysteries of England and I will next time I visit the USA. Tom
